Get Your Flu Shot Says Medical Director, Susan Besser, M.D.

It’s fall and that means flu season is here.  So what do you do? First try to prevent the flu.

It takes a few weeks for the shot to be completely effective so try to get it as early as you can.
Always remember, the better you treat yourself the less susceptible you are to illness. “The old adage,  ‘Get lots of rest, eat healthy, exercise regularly and try not to stress is still more relevant than ever before .”
Good hand washing techniques help prevent the spread of the flu and colds so hand wash or use a bactericidal spray.

If you get the flu you will have a fever (102 degress or maybe more).  You will have severe body aches and headache.  You may have a sore throat, runny nose, cough, nausea or diarrhea.  Other illnesses, of course, can also cause these symptoms so the only way to tell for sure if it is the flu is to be tested by your doctor.

If you have Influenza, there is a treatment.  If you have a cold or other viral illness there is no treatment other than medications to help the symptoms (such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen).
Both Influenza and  most viral illnesses will last about a week to ten days.

Remember take care of yourself this winter. We hope you stay healthy. If you need us, Doctors Express in Memphis will be ready to treat you.
