July 16 Q&A From Dr. Besser

What vaccinations does my son need before starting school at five years of age? Assuming your son has had all his vaccines to this point he needs the following vaccines before starting school: DTaP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis), Pneumococcal (possibly-this is not required), MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella), Varicella, Hepatitis A and Meningiococcal (possibly, these last two are not required). He will also benefit from the Influenza shot when it becomes available later this year. Your pediatrician or the health department (if that is where your son gets his shots) will know which ones he needs.

What is the swimmer’ s ear that children get every summer? Swimmers ear is a bacterial infection of the skin of the ear canal. It is treated with antibiotic ear drops and occasionally in severe cases, antibiotic pills.
