This Week’s Q&A From Doctor’s Express-Memphis

-Is there anything new out there for the treatment of Spring time allergies?

No,unfortunately. But here are some tips- take your allergy medicine everyday.  It doesn’t work as well if you stop and start it. Keep your house dusted and remember to dust things like blinds that attract dust. Cover your mattress and pillow in plastic to prevent dust mites.  Remember to shower when you come in from outside to wash of the pollen. And, if you are allergic to dogs or cats, keep them out of your bedroom.

What causes Osteoporosis and how can it be prevented?

Osteoporosis is a thinning of bone. The most common cause is loss of estrogen in aging women, but it can occur in men too.  There are other causes such as certain medications like steroids, long periods of inactivity and a diet deficient in calcium and vitamin D. Prevention includes regular weight-bearing exercise to keep the bones strong and daily consumption of calcium and vitamin D. Calcium is found in vitamins and in many foods (dairy products, vegetables) and in calcium supplements.. Around 1000 mg daily is a good dose.  However, if you have a history of kidney stones, check with your doctor before adding calcium. Vitamin D can be found in vitamins and in sun exposure (but be careful about tanning which harms the skin).
